Wer soll das alles lesen?”, fragt sich so mancher Besucher, der das erste Mal eine Nationalbibliothek betritt. “Wer soll das alles unterbringen?”, fragen sich die Direktoren der Bibliotheken, so auch die der British Library.

Tatsächlich sollten Nationalbibliotheken aufblasbar konzipiert werden, denn ihr Bestand verdoppelt sich alle 20 Jahre. Alle 20 Jahre also müsste die British Library neue Häuser in der horrend teuren Londoner City mieten – oder Bestände digitalisieren und danach in die günstige Provinz auslagern …

The aim of this document is to define activities relating to the digitization of original cultural materials, and to outline general steps for planning and management of this process. The activities described in this document address library/archival issues, imaging and conversion work, and IT infrastructure issues in particular, and were identified using project management outlines from several organizations with significant experience working with cultural materials. This document defines “digitization” as a complete process, and covers all project components from content selection through delivery of digitized objects into a repository environment.

Head of Library Systems at Johns Hopkins

The Sheridan Libraries at Johns Hopkins University are recruiting a Head of Library Systems.

Within a collaborative and service-oriented environment, the Head of Library Systems manages and provides leadership for the Library Systems Department within the Library Digital Programs.

The primary duties and responsibilities of the job:

Responsibilities include technology analysis and strategic planning; overseeing implementation of central and distributed hardware, software, networking, desktop support, and help desk services; coordinating computing and telecommunication support for various library and university activities; supervising staff; recommending operating budgets required to support, enhance and expand the Libraries’ digital resources.

Works closely with other library departments in developing and maintaining library services; collaborates variously with the Digital Research and Curation Center; coordinates and collaborates with Information Technology @ Johns Hopkins and the other university libraries, as appropriate, to facilitate use and development of the Libraries’ electronic resources, as well as other electronic resources on campus; maintains strong partnerships with IT staff throughout the University in the ongoing assessment of and planning for the robustness of Hopkins’ network infrastructure; coordinates computing and telecommunication support for the shared library management system, the library’s Web site, and other Web-based services; collaborates with Libraries’ Human Resources Manager on technology training.
